Gospel Jazz Concert at Saint David's

For two Sunday sessions (Sept 13 & 20), the people of San Juan Island were treated to an amazing concert at St. David's Episcopal Church of Gospel Jazz by local musicians. The concert was master-minded by professional jazz musician, Rich Barker, who resides on San Juan Island. Rich not only put together a group of talented muscians, but he musically arranged most of the pieces. Old gospel favorites such as "The Old Rugged Cross", "Amazing Grace", "Jesus Loves Me," and others were put into the context of toe-tapping jazz harmonies. Donations raised at the concert went to the Building Fund at Saint David's.

The following are some photos celebrating the event.

Integral to the success of the concert was the Sound Technician, Gary Ford, whose job was to regulate all the microphones and mix the sound to achieve the desired effect. There was a lot of dial twisting and level pulling to accomplish this task. St. David in the backgound rises up to give his blessing on the impending concert. Are his fingers crossed?
Rich Barker warms up his "chops" prior to the concert. An accomplished muscian, Rich plays several instuments and is a composer/arranger as well. Kudos to the master-mind of this concert !!
Drummer Denny Holm shares a laugh with a friend during the intermission. His drumming caused a lot of toe tapping and swaying bodies. Some concert goers had trouble staying in their seats. It was hard for some to keep from breaking into dance.
Jim Vedder, life-long jazz enthusiast and, recently, a budding bass player, made his debut on the jazz scene. This was his first "gig." Great thumping on the big viol, Jim. Take care of those finger tips. We expect to hear more from you in the future.
